How do I apply for Spanish Nationality?

We have summarized some of the steps necessary to apply for Spanish Nationality below. Visit the Spanish Embassy in Miami or the Spanish Embassy in New York or perhaps one near you for complete details.

Who can apply for Spanish nationality under the provisions of Law 52?

1. People whose father or mother was of Spanish origin may be eligible to apply for Spanish nationality.

2. People whose grandparents lost or gave up Spanish citizenship as a result of exile.

LAW 52 HAS EXPIRED AS OF DECEMBER 27, 2011.

What documentation is needed to apply for Spanish nationality?

For children of parents of Spanish origin:

   1. Spanish nationality application

   2. Legalized birth certificate issued by a local registry office abroad.

   3. Legalized birth certificate the parent with Spanish origin issued by a local registry office abroad.

For grandchildren of those who lost or had to give up Spanish citizenship as a result of exile:

   1. Spanish nationality application

   2. Legalized birth certificate issued by a local registry office abroad.

   3. Legalized birth certificate the parent with Spanish origin issued by a local registry office abroad. This certificate is intended only to link the parent to the grandparent.

   4. Legalized birth certificate the grandparent with Spanish origin issued by a Spanish Civil Registry (Consular or Municipal). If they were born before 1870, you may provide a certificate of baptism.

Cuban Certificates

Cuban certificates cannot be more than three months old.

Bring two photo copies of each of your documents so you can have them notarized at the Embassy for $7.35 each. Bring exact change. Do not leave any original documents with the consulate.
